Why do these images hold such fascination for me? What is their strength? Could it be the modern vanitas inherent in their nature? These Mary Magdalenes of our modern times seem to weep through the paper. The cheerfulness is almost grating. Of course the person who put up these placards was hardly aware that their message would be conveyed beyond the attention of someone walking past who had an interest in a party or discount sale. The person who made them, however, did touch on the essence of the matter, allowing beauty to blossom briefly.
The cult status they already had in some cases, like Mona Lisa and Madonna, may not be within everyone’s grasp, but it is still always better than being tattered by wind and weather. Frozen on paper, the girls grow out of their transience.
The tender, thin, wrinkled paper skin brings a sense of recognizable vulnerability and sorrow to the beautiful young women on its surface, whether torn or intact. Even so, they project a willing smile that flies seductively straight from their two-dimensional existence into our yearning hearts. That is the eternal beauty I mean.
